Mazda electric: a more detailed look at Mazda vehicles
January 24 2023, Spinelli Mazda
The Mazda MX-30 is an electric vehicle that has very recently appeared on the market, more precisely, since the 2022 model-year. Specially designed for urban settings –given its shorter range than most of its rivals-, the MX-30 still remains a very interesting model.
Moreover, the coming years are very promising when it comes to Mazda and electric vehicles, with the imminent arrival of new hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric models.

Mazda electric: what models are available?
For the time being, only the Mazda MX-30 is offered, at a base price of $42,150. However, the manufacturer has announced the arrival of a new platform between now and 2025, which means that many more electric Mazda vehicles will hit the market. The brand is aiming at offering electric versions –or at least hybrid or plug-in hybrid versions- of every model.
Electric range on Mazda vehicles
For the moment, the 2023 Mazda MX-30 offers 161 kilometers of electric range. Yes, this definitely can seem low when compared to the competition. However, since this vehicle is specially designed for urban settings –which also translates into short daily commutes- the electric range for this electric Mazda vehicle is more than enough.
Moreover, the amount of public charging stations are constantly increasing across the province. This means that should you have to drive over longer distances, it will be easy for you to charge your MX-30 quickly on the way; you can recuperate 80 % of battery power in just 36 minutes on a quick charging station.
However, Mazda has recently announced having the intention of bringing a rotary motor to the MX-30. Well known for its use on the RX-7 and RX-8, this powertrain –which will obviously be small in size- will work to increase the electric range by charging the battery while the motor is in use.
For the time being, we still do not know if this technology will be offered in Canada.
Technical specifications for electric vehicles
The Mazda MX-30 has an electric powertrain and a 35.5 kWh battery for a total of 143 horsepower and 200 lb-ft. maximum torque. The two available versions –the GS and GT- both have front-wheel drive and provide you with outstanding energy efficiency when driving in the city, with consumption numbers as low as 2.4 Le/100 km.
Moreover, the MX-30 can welcome up to 5- passengers and offers 431 liters of cargo space in the trunk alone. When rear seats are folded, this climbs to 1,053 liters.
Amongst the features the MX-30 offers, you will have:
- Freestyle doors (or suicide doors)
- 18- inch wheels
- LED headlights
- Apple CarPlay/Android Auto
- An 8.8- inch touch screen
- Heated seats and heated steering wheel
- Air conditioning
- A rear-view camera
- Blind spot surveillance
- Rear cross traffic alert
- Intelligent braking assist on reverse
- Front and rear pedestrian alert
- And more, depending on selected model
More electric vehicles to come?
As mentioned previously, Mazda is planning on offering several more electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in a not so distant future. For example, a new hybrid version of the CX-50 should be made available soon, as well as plug-in hybrid versions of the CX-70 and CX-90, although we still do not know which ones will be available here.
