Mazda moving towards hybrid and electric cars here in Canada?
July 26 2022, Spinelli Mazda
In this crazy race towards the transformation of vehicles into electric and hybrid, certain people might think that Mazda is indifferent. Make no mistake: this Japanese giant is simply taking its time; or at least that is the case here in North-America. In Europe, it’s a whole other story.
On the other side of the Atlantic, there are already three hybrid vehicles currently available on the market: the Mazda2, Mazda3 and the Mazda CX-30. Let’s not forget the all-new 2023 CX-60, a plug-in hybrid SUV that European consumers will also have access to very soon.
The Mazda Japanese manufacturer and hybrid vehicles
Even if we do not have the opportunity of seeing this hybrid SUV model here, we will, however, have the pleasure of welcoming the CX-70. It shares with it several common components, although it comes in a larger format; which is ideal for the North-American market. It will indeed be the very first hybrid Mazda to touch Canadian soil. Even if we would love to offer loads of detailed information on this model, we cannot. Information on the web is rare, and all we can confirm is that the plug-in model maintains the same 2.5 L 4- cylinder engine as the CX-60.
An electric motor and several models
An electric motor will be added, and we can only suppose that power will play around 300 horsepower. However, this powertrain will not be exclusive to the CX-70, since it will also be found at the heart of the CX-80 and the CX-90, the former being exclusive to the European market, and the latter a model that will hit our North-American roads.
Full electric: 2022 Mazda MX-30
However, in Montreal and Lachine, an all-new 100 % electric SUV is creating quite the buzz, and with reason. We are referring here to the 2022 MX-30, a compact utility vehicle with a total autonomy of 161 kilometers. This may seem little to you when you compare it to its rivals, however, several consumers who are searching for their first electric vehicle, will definitely be drawn to the fact that it utilizes not one drop of fuel and creates zero emission.
Less emissions means less expenses
One of the appeals of this electric Mazda, is certainly the fact that it will cost significantly less to use than a Mazda model with a traditional fuel engine, for example. Less components also means no oil change (etc.), which also translates into less expenses. Moreover, government assistance is also offered, which takes a substantial amount off the total of the bill.
Take the cost into your own hands!
Moreover, it is possible to use an online tool offered by Hydro-Quebec that allows you to calculate the difference of costs between a combustion engine and electric motor vehicle. In the case of the MX-30, we can confirm that it will come down to approximately 500$ of electricity for one year, compared to the CX-30 model, with fuel prices for one year reaching around $ 2,400.
This will not only alleviate your wallet, it will assist the environment as well.
Advantages and conclusion
One crucial thing to mention about Mazda models is that they all –without exception- offer an outstanding driving experience. Even if certain manufacturers have swapped this aspect for greater fuel efficiency, Mazda made sure that whatever changes were made, nothing would be taken away from the pleasure of driving.
This said, even if it is a hybrid Mazda vehicle, rest assured that you will not be compromising on any of the aspects that make the driving experience thrilling. This will also certainly be the case for the all-new Mazda CX-70 hybrid coming soon, an even more luxurious SUV than the CX-5 and the CX-50. You can also expect the arrival of a CX-90 quite soon, a midsize SUV with three rows of seats.
Finally, even if it seems like the wait has been long before we finally had the opportunity of enjoying Mazda hybrids, it will have been worth our while. After all, the Japanese manufacturer has set standards very high, and perfection takes time.
