Test drive and review of the 2021 Mazda CX-5
March 26 2021,
The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) recently released its list of finalists for the 2021 Canadian Car of the Year. The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is among the top finalists for the 2021 Best Mid-size Utility Vehicle award. Here are a few driving impressions of the 2021 Mazda CX-5 based on test drives collected in the trade press.
Design of the 2021 Mazda CX-5
Japanese design is purist and minimalist; it favors sleek, elegant and subtly dynamic lines. The CX-5 is available in 6 versions, the GX, GS, Kuro, GT, Signature and 100th Anniversary Edition. All these versions offer a palette of 8 colours including Sonic Silver Metallic, Eternal Blue Mica and Soul Red Crystal Metallic.
The 2021 CX-5 Kuro features 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels with a black metallic finish and Jet Black Mica details. The 100th Anniversary Edition adds wheel centre caps with the 100th Anniversary logo.
Depending on the model, the 2021 CX-5 offered by Spinelli Mazda near downtown Montreal also features a power-operated glass moonroof, LED fog lights, LED rear combination lights and a distinctive grille. As an option, you can also outfit your 2021 CX-5 with a power liftgate with programmable height.
Interior of the 2021 Mazda CX-5
The interior of the 2021 CX-5 is remarkably quiet thanks to its Kudo design, which allows for significantly reduced tire and wind noise. In the serenity of this cabin, you will enjoy the sound quality of the Bose premium sound system and the 10 speakers that equip the higher-range versions of the 2021 Mazda CX-5.
Some models are equipped with the Active Driving Display, which projects essential driving information directly onto the windshield in the driver's field of vision.
Every 2021 CX-5 on display at Spinelli Mazda near Laval and the South Shore are equipped with a 40/20/40 split folding rear seat that allows you to fit longer objects, even with 2 child seats installed at the rear.
Powertrain of the new 2021 Mazda CX-5
The GX, GS, Kuro and GT variants come standard with the Skyactiv-G 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder in-line engine. The Signature and 100th Anniversary Edition versions are powered by a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder Turbo engine that develops an output of up to 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. This Turbo is also available as an option on the GT version.
With the exception of the GX, which is equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, all other models are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and i-Activ all-wheel drive system.
i-Activsense technologies
i-Activsense is a new generation of active safety technologies that automatically sense the surrounding area of the 2021 CX-5. These include the Blind Spot Monitoring, Adaptive Front-Lighting, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Smart City Brake Support and Radar Cruise Control systems.
2021 Mazda CX-5 Test Drives
All of the 2021 Mazda CX-5 test drive testimonials that we've collected in the trade press agree on the excellent driving position that provides the driver with excellent visibility to the front, the rear and the sides.
The engine provides excellent torque thrust even at low rpm, and the gearbox provides smooth shifting. In Sport mode, the 6-speed automatic transmission downshifts to provide engine braking. The 6-speed automatic transmission and engine are perfectly synchronized for maximum efficiency, and the suspension offers biting road handling thanks to shock absorbers that almost eliminate roll.
By all accounts, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 is one of the best choices among all mid-size SUVs for sale on the Canadian market.
