The 2021 Mazda MX-30 will have a plug-in hybrid version!
Good news: the all-new Mazda MX-30, in addition to offering an all-electric version when it arrives on the market, will also be offered as a plug-in hybrid, an information confirmed by Mazda Canada. Spinelli, your Mazda dealer in Montreal near Laval and the South Shore, tells you more about this new electric SUV and its plug-in variant!
A one-of-a-kind SUV
Mazda's first-ever electric vehicle, the MX-30, made its debut at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. This subcompact crossover, proudly displaying the styling language of other Mazda SUVs, is already generating envy even before its imminent arrival on the North American market.
While the technical details of this new model have not yet been announced in our markets, we have those of the European version, which gives us a taste of what we can expect. The MX-30 has a range of around 200 kilometres, calculated according to the European cycle (WLTP); these figures should be similar on this side of the Atlantic, unless the manufacturer decides to also offer a battery with an increased range compared to the European model. But for the moment, a 35.5 kW battery is being considered, according to several sources.
In addition, it will have an almost perfect weight distribution (almost 50/50) and will offer electric G-Vectoring Control Plus for optimal driving precision.
A silhouette that's sure to please!
The MX-30's rearward-sloping roofline, dynamic front end and pronounced, square wheel arches make it a spectacular vehicle. However, it's the freestyle doors (rear-hinged in the 2nd row) that really catch the eye and will bring back fond memories for fans of the now defunct Mazda RX-8.
One thing is for sure: both the electric and plug-in hybrid versions will not go unnoticed on the road... like all Mazda vehicles!
Under the hood of the electric SUV
The main questions are related to the type of engine that will power the future MX-30. While the manufacturer has so far been tight-lipped about it, a glance at the European side of things tells us that the electric motor that will power the MX-30 will generate an output of about 143 horsepower.
And the plug-in hybrid?
No more information on this side, except that we could see the return of the Wankel rotary engine aboard the MX-30 hybrid, according to what Jeff Guyton, president of Mazda North American Operations, said last December. This engine, well known to RX-8 owners, is not designed to offer a power increase, but rather to act as a generator to give the MX-30 an even greater driving range.
The specifications of this new plug-in hybrid SUV are not yet known, but we already know that the Mazda MX-30 hybrid will be a big hit with buyers, who have long been waiting for a Mazda vehicle that is not only hybrid, but also plug-in and electric.
While we wait for the electric and plug-in MX-30 models to arrive on the market, let's take a look at some technical specifications, taken straight from the European model.
- Length: 4,395 mm
- Width: 1,795 mm
- Height: 1,555 mm
- Wheelbase: 2,655 mm
- Powertrain: e-SKYACTIV (143 horsepower?)
- Battery: 35.5 kWh lithium-ion
No details were released about the interior either, except that it features high-quality, sustainable materials like cork, fabric made from recycled plastic and faux leather. The dashboard is also sleek, and we can assume that the technologies and conveniences found in other Mazda vehicles will also be present on board the MX-30.
For the moment, we don't know the price range of the Mazda MX-30, nor the number of versions available, nor its exact arrival date; we do know, however, that Quebec and British Columbia are the preferred locations for the sale of this model. To make sure you don't miss anything about its arrival and to be one of the first to test drive it, keep an eye on our website or come see us at Spinelli Mazda as soon as today!
